DeSean Jackson

There is a pretty good article (about three pages) about DeSean Jackson in Sports Illustrated Magazine this week.  It talks about his brothers, the filming, the USC decision, and a bunch of other stuff.  The Cal Heisman PR department did well.

Don't know why Cal keeps getting 3 to 4 star recruits. We have 9 verbal committments as of now. UCLA already had more than 20, some of them are as high as 4 and 5 stars.

I saw these numbers on Rivals.com

Hopefully we'll play well into the season and that our ranking will get more quality recruits.

Well, we have gotten quite a few 5 star guys. They don't always pan out. But I think there are only 15 or so per year. So that does not leave a bunch to play with. Joe Ayoob, Desmond Bishop, and DeSean were all 5 star guys, Out average rank last year was 3.85, so that means we had a closer to 4 than 3 star average.

This year, the three star guys that wanted to go to Cal had to commit early, or they would not be coming. We have a lot of 4 and 5 star guys who we are still in the hunt for, and when Dorrell gets fired, all those UCLA guys will be looking as well (although frankly if they get someone in quickly, I do not think teams lose a lot of recruits when teams change coaches). But JT likes to see the guys play through their senior year, and make sure that they are the right fit for Cal.

I will say two things about recruiting - you need to get the guys that fit your team - for Cal that is fast athletes at all positions, and you need to improve them no matter how great they were coming in. Jahvid Best was a 3 or 4 star recruit. I think he is going to be making millions in the league. Joe Ayoob was a 5 star guy, who was a good guy, but did not fit JTs mold. So it was not a good fit.

In any event, do not worry about Cal recruiting. We will have another top 15 class, for the 5th year in a row. We are a top 15 team year in and year out. We will maintain that. And we will have years where we challenge for a national title. 5 years ago, that all was a pipe dream. Today, that is reality.
